Patty Knouse was a stay-at-home mom and involved as an advocate for her autistic son, Michael. During this time, she hosted multiple tea-parties at her home and was repeatedly encouraged to open a business of her own. In 2002, after years of dreaming, Patty, at the age of 54, finally realized her dream and became co-owner of her first tea-room. For three years she learned from the successes and failures of that business. Ultimately, a new dream of running a tearoom of her own, and making it a family affair, evolved.
Until that time, Patty’s daughter, Nicole Freshwater, had been employed in a full-time office job. Nicole also longed for a business of her own. She had a jewelry-making hobby that she hoped to transform into a full-time occupation. During the Christmas Season in 2005, she decided to make her dream a reality and partner with her mother Patty.
In 2006, in addition to Patty’s already vast accumulation, Patty and Nicole began collecting things for their tea-room. The most important things they collected were ideas. There were ideas for themed teas, ideas for displays, and ideas for decorating; just to name a few. The ideas were stockpiled until the ladies could find a home for them. The ladies prayed for an answer as to where they should open their business. Perrysville was to be the answer they needed. Patty’s roots are in the North Hills and she always wished to have her business in the area. The tearoom was a huge success which, in many ways became a blessing and a curse. It was becoming obvious the tea-room was running out of space for their needs.
While serving out their lease, the perfect building became available for sale in West View. In 2008, renovations began on a new tea-room. Tony, Patty’s husband and Nicole’s father, worked day and night for over a year to get the building done. They took this time to regroup and revamp and put all of their efforts into the new location. It also gave them time to spend time with their sweetheart Ivy, Nicole’s little girl and Patty’s granddaughter.
The wait was worth it! In the winter of 2010, AntiquiTea reopened and has turned out more beautiful than anticipated. The shop is a wonderful place to gather all of a tea-lover’s needs. All of the teas served in the tearoom are available for purchase in loose form. The rooms are full of delightful treasures and many one-of-a-kind items are also available for purchase! The tearoom boasts a magnificent selection of teas, sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, and more. You can even make reservations for Afternoon Tea with your friends and family and have Patty, Nicole, and their remarkable staff, serve you tea in true Victorian fashion!
